Angélica Nieto Conquers the World at 18

A year after taking silver in Astana, Tenerife’s own Angélica Nieto has claimed the under‑20 world title in grappling gi. Last year, she returned from Kazakhstan with a silver medal that left her wanting more, admitting she wasn’t satisfied and had her mind set on gold. Twelve months later, the 18‑year‑old from Granadilla has achieved exactly that: world champion in grappling gi and bronze medallist in NoGi. A double podium finish in Greece that confirms her as one of Europe’s brightest—and most solid—grappling talents.

Fresh back on the Island, she says she still can’t believe it. The victory is especially meaningful because she shares it with her father, who is also her coach, mentor, and first inspiration. Their work together, she insists, is what made the title possible.

In just three years, Angélica has gone from a promising youth competitor to an undeniable international reference. Her rise began with a European gold in Baku, followed by the silver in Astana that left her “with a thorn stuck.” Since then, her progress has been meteoric. This past year has been one of intense adaptation—training, studying, moving to a new city.

Her life has evolved as much as her weight class. This season she chose to compete at 58 kg instead of 65, a change she believes ultimately benefited her. Balancing university studies in Business Administration, teaching children at Gracie Barra, and constant travel has required careful planning and a new level of independence.

In Greece, she arrived as one of the favorites, but nothing is guaranteed on the mat. She describes the final as the toughest and most incredible match of her career. The gold cements her among the best in the world in her category, alongside her NoGi bronze. She admits she has always preferred competing with the gi.

Grappling remains a minority sport in Spain, but athletes like Angélica are helping put the Canary Islands on the global map of non‑striking martial arts. She believes the sport will eventually make it into the Olympic program—and competing in the Games would be her greatest dream.

For now, her goals are clear: earn her black belt and aim for the IBJJF World Championship. Her next major target is already set—Las Vegas, this December.
